Judge’s Notes & Bio
FEATURE
First Place: There were a lot of excellent images for the Feature category. This image stood out for the sincere moment captured. What a sweet slice of life.
Second Place: Nicely composed feature with layers at the most perfect time of the day.
Third Place: This is a nice moment captured. This wasn’t the same timely moments as the top two but the photographer did wait for the moment and got a nice daily feature.
Honorable Mention: This moment was a good find for “I am stuck at the airport feature” assignment at a daily newspaper.
Honorable Mention: There were several images that looked like this was part of a series. I liked this one but felt it could have been entered with the others for the picture story category.
PORTRAIT
First Place: The lighting in this portrait is subtle but perfectly done. Can’t go wrong with the use of Black and White too.
Second Place: The shadows in the composition of this portrait (on the wall and on the subject) makes this portrait excellent. Subjects smile makes this a winner. Hard to pick the First and Second place.
Third Place: This image is a good example of daily journalism portrait for a newspaper. I love the starburst light in the back keeping the subject separated from the background.
Honorable Mention: Great feel to this image and much discussion between this and the Third place. Both great examples of daily portrait work that deserves recognition.
Honorable Mention: Nice artsy portrait that also deserves a “tip of the hat”.
ENTERTAINMENT
First Place: Beautifully done and love the black and white. Lighting on stage really worked for the photographer on this one.
Second Place: The photographer worked this angle to get something different and I can appreciate that. Looking for the unusual point of view can be rewarding in the end.
Third Place: The movement and flow of this photo is beautiful. Might even be better in Black and White.
Honorable Mention: I have seen this photo numerous times but I still love the feeling. Deserves recognition but didn’t rise to the top three places.
Honorable Mention: Nice saturation of colors and clean background. Deserves recognition but didn’t rise to the top three places.
GENERAL NEWS
First Place : This jumped to the front with all three in the frame with great expressions. The photographer was really looking out for that split second frame. This category was the one of the tougher categories to judge so I felt it merited two honorable mentions.
Second Place: The women’s expression here is of pure joy. What a wonderful moment captured.
Third Place: Tender moment here and you can feel the pain the women is feeling. The background is a bit distracting with the bright white areas.
Honorable Mention: Protest are hard to get unique images. It looks like there is a lot of emotion with this protester.
Honorable Mention: I think this is creative and I give the photographer kudos for thinking outside the box.
PICTORIAL
First Place: I kept going back to this image. It made me laugh and it made me look at it more than once. I love the framing. This was a first place winner.
Second Place: Incredible full moon pictorial. Waiting for the right moment with an airplane placed it on the top for this category.
Third Place: Nice muted colors and lines in this photo.
Honorable Mention: Vibrant colors and placement of the hut between the trees. Looks like a postcard.
Honorable Mention: Waiting for the fog on this one was worth it. Nicely composed.
SPORTS ACTION
First Place : This category was extremely hard to narrow down. A lot of great sports action shots. This one rose to the top after much discussion. This is an excellent peak football action shot. I would love to have this one in my portfolio.
Second Place: This photo has the actual sweat coming off forehead. Image is sharp through a gate. This one took precision to get this sports action shot.
Third Place: Too bad the camera guy is in the left hand bottom corner. That prevented this from having a clean background but it does have a great feel to it. Nice shot.
Honorable Mention: Great timing on this photo. I have seen this before so it didn’t place in the top three but it does deserve some kudos.
Honorable Mention :This photo made me cringe. Great capture. Not one you see often like the typical sports action shots.
SPORTS FEATURE
First Place: This photo rose to the top. From left to right it has an expression on each person’s face. Stellar capture.
Second Place: This category was a tough one along with General News. A lot of emotion and feeling in all of the images. This rose to the top because it was fun to see that the photographer knew to watch what was happening in the water and the possibility of someone being pushed in with them. Anticipation is such a huge part of photojournalism.
Third Place: This small yet big moment. It is not only sweet but also shows how access was key for the photojournalist.
Honorable Mention: This was a hard one to put as an honorable mention. A lot of debate but I feel this is a good moment but possible common where the third place was not. Still a solid image.
Honorable Mention: This has such a good feeling of movement and expression. To catch them in mid tackle of their teammate and be sharp focus shows the photographer was ready to catch the moment.
SPOT NEWS
The first place photo is a peak action moment from exactly the right angle during an arrest. The flying saliva adds a sense of urgency to the image, even if the photographer is uncomfortably close.
The second place image is an unusual incident and cleanly composed. It appears to have the original caption. I’m not sure why it wasn’t updated with information from a story.
The third place photo is an iconic portrait of a bloodied demonstrator. Kudos to the photographer for continuing to make pictures after the obvious action was over.
Honorable mention to a tornado aftermath photo that uses body language and good timing to show a story where a clean view of the damage wasn’t possible.
FIRE
First Place: The emotional response captured here made this photo rise to the First place mark.
Second Place: The smug look this man is giving back to the photographer gives this an eerie feeling to it. Nicely done
Third Place: A lot of what makes a spot news photo good is the access the photographer tries to get. This photo is a bit busy with the foreground which is why it didn’t make it for First and Second place but the photographer still got a good daily spot news image.
