Judge’s Notes & Bio
FEATURE
First place is a fun photo any photographer would be glad to find on a hot summer day when sent out to look for features.
Second place - love the moment between the guy having lunch and the goat; composed and cropped well.
Third place has nice light. I like how the photographer waited for the waves to be just right.
PORTRAIT
First Place Portrait: This photo has a beautiful feel to it. Nice light and her eyes closed makes it.
Second Place Portrait: Placement of the person off center, with just a sliver of his face showing…. and the texture of the wall behind matches the rabbit in his hands. Nicely done.
Third Place Portrait: By reading the caption this photo placed in the top three. We liked the creativity but almost want to see more of the grandson a bit or shot a bit differently.
ENTERTAINMENT
First Place Entertainment: This photo was by far on the top of this category. Wonderful, soulful expression.
Second Place Entertainment: Not totally sure what’s going on with this photo but it kept us looking. Bizarre yet intriguing.
Third Place Entertainment: The black and white tones are incredible in this photo. Beautiful detail shot.
Honorable Mention Entertainment: The man’s expression made this photo that was clearly taken during the Oscars. Looks like it could have worked best as part of a multiple photo package versus just on its own.
GENERAL NEWS
We gave this category two HM’s. Good variety in this category:
First Place: You can feel the emotion of this photo. The people in the back and their expressions add to it.
Second Place: This is a creative way to photograph a protest. Nicely done. We have all seen this before but the puddle was clear and you can clearly see the protesters.
Third Place: This is a sweet moment from a news assignment. Nice capture.
Honorable Mention: We all feel that this could have been shot with a longer lens and the background would have been less distracting. Good news photo of flooding.
Honorable Mention: This photo was one we kept going back to. We feel that if it was cropped to cut out the distracting person in the aisle and more on the performer and the person on the left taking photos this photo would have placed higher.
PICTORIAL
First Place Pictorial: We all loved the palm trees and sense of place for this pictorial. You can tell where it is taken at. Hard to decide between this and the second place. Both had a good balance of composition.
Second Place Pictorial: Nice use of parallel lines of the fence to the palm trees to the clouds then to the snow on the mountains…. made this one a winner because of the composition. The photographer framed it nicely.
Third Place Pictorial:This photo has a nice monochromatic feeling to it for a nice daily weather shot.
Honorable Mention for Pictorial: This was also a nice photo of the California snow on the mountains, but we all feel like it could have been cropped from the bottom. The other entries were more aware of composition for the Pictorial Category.
SPORTS ACTION
This category was extremely difficult to narrow down. A lot of debate. Great entries in this category,
First Place: Incredible peak action captured here. We kept going back to this image.
Second Place: The framing on this image is great. The kids reaction on the left makes this a second place winner.
Third Place : Nice action shot. There were so many good action shots submitted but we felt this one was a good third place contender
Honorable Mention: After some debate between this and the golfing second place photo we gave this an HM. It’s a nice sports photo.
Honorable Mention 2: The off-center placement of this photo is great with a nice background that was not distracting. Great sports photo.
SPORTS FEATURE
This was by far the hardest one to narrow down. We gave three Honorable Mentions. Every frame deserved recognition.
First Place Sports Feature: There were a lot of excellent images but the framing and expression on this athlete’s face is a first-place winner.
Second Place Sports Feature: We all loved the moment with the coach looking back at the teammates and the expressions on all of their faces is priceless.
Third Place Sports Feature: Again….the expressions on all three athletes was well captured here in this photo. Nicely done
HM1 Sports Feature: This is a great reaction from the coach. Hard to decide on this category. We debated for some time, but we do love this image and felt it deserved recognition.
HM2 Sports Feature: This is also a great jubilation sports feature. We didn’t think it was a first to third place winner but deserved recognition as an honorable mention.
HM3 Sports Feature: The disappointment on the athlete’s face makes this a winner. In the process of eliminating and narrowing down we did notice the photographer didn’t get the tops of his feet in the photo.
SPOT NEWS
First Place Spot News: This photo was peak emotion and the foreground and background spoke clearly this was a school lockdown. This photographer was ready to get a good story telling image. Watch caption spelling errors.
Second Place Spot News: This is a great example of a photographer who was on top of it. Being at the right place at the right time. Truly a good spot news photos.
Third Place Spot News: The guy tip toeing in the back trying to walk around the flooded water makes this photo great. Nice spot news photo
HM1 Spot News: This photo looks like it should have been placed in the General News category. Nice clean, pulls you in and emotional image.
HM2 Spot News: This photo is a bit hard to read since we can’t see their faces and really what is actually happened. After looking at the caption we could see it was a shooting. Good on this photographer for producing an image on a hard spot news assignment.
FIRE
Slim choices for this category. No third or honorable mentions
First Place Fire: The peak action for this fire photo entry rose to the top. Nice color and interaction with the firefighters.
Second Place Fire: This was also a nice shot but there wasn’t as much expression between the fire fighters but still deserved credit.
