“Forever Marilyn”
..
The 26 foot tall, 24,000 pound stainless steel and aluminum sculpture “Forever Marilyn” was installed in Palm Springs to promote tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic at a reported cost of one million dollars. Some believe she can reverse the slumping tourist industry and save local businesses during the crisis. Aftab Dada, Chairman of PS Resorts, the tourism group who purchased the sculpture said, We want to make sure the 800 plus businesses in downtown that have suffered will get some relief. We are hoping she’ll be a magnet and all business will benefit. Some are against the statue’s placement and others oppose it altogether saying it sexualizes Monroe inappropriately and is misogynistic. The small crew of artisans from the Seward Johnson Atelier in New Jersey had to work round the clock for over a week in order to install the sculpture during the record heat wave in Palm Springs.

The sculpture “Forever Marilyn” is sprayed in the middle of the night during the sculpture’s installation. The 26 foot tall, 24,000 pound stainless steel and aluminum sculpture is being installed in Palm Springs to promote tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic, reportedly at a cost of $1 million. Due to a record heat wave, with temperatures during the week tying the all time high of 123 degrees, the surface of the statue reached over 150 degrees during the day. The heat is making it impossible for the artists to complete much of the work during the daytime, forcing them to work at night. Saturday, June 19, 2021 in Palm Springs, Calif.

A protest, led largely by the Committee to Relocate Marilyn or CReMa opposed the statue’s location. Said CReMa leader and designer Trina Turk, ‘We’re not opposed to Marilyn. We just don’t want her in this location. The city is not following the rules. They think it makes a pretty backdrop for photos, but it blocks the mid-century modern museum’s architecture. PS Resorts is co-opting the street for private interest. They think she’ll be a panacea for small business. I have one of those businesses. I don’t agree. Another group didn’t want the statue near the museum, claiming it is misogynistic. They are concerned that school children will see her panties while exiting the museum. Others feel the sculpture inappropriately sexualizes Marilyn due to the ability to see up her dress. Sunday, June 20, 2021 in Palm Springs, Calif.

Occasionally a horse like Angel slips through the cracks.Ó California Angel finished 11th place in the big race. Said Leonard, ÒI was disappointed and gratified at the same time. I really wanted to win. But I was also very grateful to be here at all. Just a few months ago it would have been hard to imagine one of the biggest days in my life was coming. Just being here was an accomplishment.Ó The horseÕs owner, Chris Walsh, had an offer to sell Angel for half a million dollars. ÒI couldnÕt do that to George,Ó she said. ÒHe found her.
