VENICE, CA - JULY 30, 2021 - - A homeless man sleeps on a couch while spectators watch as sanitation crews clear a homeless encampment along Ocean Front Walk in Venice on July 30, 2021. The sanitation crew eventually woke the man and removed the couch. Over a dozen sanitation workers with the City of Los Angeles and contract workers with Beaches and Harbors clear homeless encampments and debris a few yards at a time on the beach near Thornton Avenue and Ocean Front Walk. The sweep began around 8 a.m. as members of St. Joseph Center and LAHSA tried to arrange housing for homeless who have been living on the beach.

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA - JULY 26, 2021 - - Diane McClinden, 63, and her dog Frankie, try and stay cool in their trailer in Almar Acres RV Park in Desert Hot Springs on July 26, 2021. “It’ pretty miserable here,” McClinden said on this day where temperatures reached a high of 97 degrees. “I don’t know what the first electric bill will be. I’m scared,” she said. McClinden recently moved into the unit. This is her first summer in Desert Hot Springs and she’s already talking about moving out of the city because of the excessive heat. She spends the day in front of a fan, with a wet towel over her shoulders in the living room of her trailer. She leaves the AC unit on low to keep her energy bill at a minimum.

LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 12, 2021 - Dennis Johnson, 60, washes himself with a bucket of water, collected from a nearby fire hydrant, at the corner of Crocker and 7th Streets in Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles on August 12, 2021. Temperatures reached 92 degrees in downtown Los Angeles on this day. Johnson, who has been living in a tent on the street for the past 4 months, says when it gets hot he just lifts the tarp over his encampment. “Mother Nature gives us what we need. What we need is some good rain,” said Johnson. Seven men and women were found dead last year from heat-related causes on sidewalks, in cars, and on bus benches in LA. Most had been living on the streets, and three were found within hours of each other in the Skid Row area in 2020 according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Judge’s Notes & Bio

Meet our judges, Joe Vitti & Charlie Nye

Joe Vitti attended first Marquette, then Ohio University, working on student publications until 1977, when he began an internship at the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson and never looked back. He served as staff photographer, page designer and assignment coordinator until 1984. He then moved to the Los Angeles Times, where he was a staff photographer in the paper’s San Fernando Valley zone section, which covered a region of some 600 square miles.

In 1990 he moved to Indianapolis as photo editor for the News. When the News and Star papers merged in 1995, he continued as photo editor. In 1998 he transitioned back to photographer. Around 2010 he took on the combined photographer/weekend photo editor role in which he served until 2014.

Charlie Nye is a retired photojournalist living in Indianapolis. He worked for newspapers in Ohio, Missouri, Minnesota, Oregon and Indiana, and also served as a National Geographic photography intern two summers while attending Ohio University (undergraduate) and the University of Missouri (graduate school). His first job out of college was as editor of a twice-weekly newspaper in Minnesota. In the 1970s-2000s he held a variety of other positions at newspapers, including staff photographer, director of photography/graphics (Eugene Register-Guard, Indianapolis News) and assistant managing editor for photo and graphics (Indianapolis Star).
