80th Anniversary show highlights student winners.
The show features the Student Photojournalist of the Year award winners from the last decade. This Nikon sponsored contest is exclusively for student members of the PPAGLA and has been dominated by the SMC Corsair News photographers.

Top three general entries from SMC students will be included in the show. 

General Call for SMC Student Entry

The PPAGLA invites all SMC students to submit their photojournalism photos.

Three SMC student entries will be chosen to show alongside Pulitzer Prize winning photos, prize winning local photojournalists, historical images and a decade of PPAGLA Student Photojournalist of the Year Photos.

Who can enter:  Any SMC student from 2015-16. 

·            This is an open call for SMC student photojournalism enthusiasts.

Deadline:  Feb 12, 2016, NOON!

How to Enter
Choose three of your best photojournalism photos that are defined by Spot News, General News, Sports Action and Sports Features, Portraits and Feature.

Upload your best three that fit any of these categories.

Category Definitions

Spot News

  • A picture of an unscheduled or breaking event for which no advance planning was possible. Examples: fires, accidents or natural disasters.

General News

  • A picture of a scheduled political, social or cultural event for which advance planning was possible. Examples: demonstrations, staged promotional or political events and other daily news.

Sports Action

  • A candid picture of a "found situation" containing strong human interest, a fresh view of the ordinary or humor. In all cases the dignity of the subject must be respected.

Sports Feature

  • A sports-related picture with strong human interest or pictorial quality that celebrates the role athletics play in the lives of athletes and fans. Examples: The joy of victory or agony of defeat, fan reaction and interaction, athlete portraits.

Portrait

  • A picture of a person that reveals the essence of the subject's character.

Feature

  • A candid picture of a "found situation" containing strong human interest, a fresh view of the ordinary or humor. In all cases the dignity of the subject must be respected.

CAPTIONS

Include a thorough and accurate caption answering the questions who, what, where when and why.

Who

·            First and last name, title if appropriate, and age.

What

·            Describe the action in the present tense even if it is obvious.

Where

·            Use city and state. Elaborate if necessary to storytelling.

When 

·            Full date- Thursday, January 28, 2016

Why.

·            This usually the second sentence in a caption.

·            Explain the social, political or cultural importance of the image.

·            Use more than one sentence if needed

At end of caption put:

  • Your full name.
  • SMC Photo Class and year
  • Instructor name.
  • email
  • Phone number

Example:

Imbed caption in File Info or caption in Lightroom. Confirm caption is imbedded in file before submission.

Photos will be disqualified for:
·            Missing captions
·         Incomplete captions
·         Gross factual errors
·         Unreadable grammar and misspellings.

Missing: Class,  Year and professor in caption..

File Names
Rename images: Last name_first_SMC_number (1, 2, 3)
Ex: Adams_Ansel_SMC_1

Ethics
All photos must be produced within strict journalistic standards.
All must be found situations where the photographer was observing, not directing the action.
