U.S. Marshal Snatches Camera From Woman in Los Angeles, Smashes it to Sidewalk, Kicks it

Khai Le

Strapped with an assault rifle, a United States Marshal stormed up to a woman recording from a residential sidewalk, snatching the camera from her hands and sending it smashing to the pavement before kicking it towards her in a shocking display of rage.
The marshal then walked off with a group of other armed cops who were part of a task force operation.

Newsonomics: A coast-to-coast newspaper shuffle is taking shape

Khai Le

From coast to coast, the spring scent of newspaper transactions hangs in the air. The big one — Apollo Global Management’s purchase of Digital First Media — is nearing completion. Meanwhile, sellers from New York City to southern California test the mettle (and wallets) of would-be buyers.

Expect that the biggest transaction of titles in recent history will be announced by the end of April. Apollo, acting within its exclusivity agreement to buy DFM, is now finishing its due diligence and arranging its financing of the $400 million deal. (“Apollo’s acquisition of Digital First Media”)

In total, millions of readers of U.S. newspapers and sites will see behind-the-home-page changes in who runs — and decides on the future of — their local news. Readers in DFM cities will wonder what Apollo’s ownership will mean — but readers of 10 papers in Pennsylvania, Texas, and New Mexico can now know their new owner.

KTTV’s Gina Silva Asks: ‘Why Do People Yell Profanities During a Reporter’s Live Shot?’

Khai Le

Gina Silva, a reporter for Los Angeles FOX affiliate KTTV, has had enough. She’s sick and tired of people barging into her live shots and shouting, “F*&k her right in the p*&sy!”

In a recent post on KTTV’s site, Silva aired her grievances and took a decidedly feminist stance against the behavior:

O.C. Register owners quit: Aaron Kushner, Eric Spitz resign executive duties

Khai Le

Aaron Kushner and Eric Spitz, the co-owners of the Orange County Register’s parent company, Freedom Communications, resigned Tuesday from executive duties at the paper and the firm, the Register reported.

The move comes less than three years after an investment group led by Kushner bought Freedom in 2012 and announced a bold plan to aggressively expand its news products. Those efforts failed.

Why Sports Illustrated laid off all of its photographers

Khai Le

Can news organizations survive without photographers on staff? That question jolted the media world Friday after Sports Illustrated laid off its entire roster.

Photographers haven’t been hit with a layoff of that scale since The Chicago Sun-Times cut its entire 28-person photo staff in 2013. The newspaper said it would use freelance photographers and ask its reporters to do some shooting of their own, though it did end up rehiring four.

The move by Sports Illustrated, owned by Time (TIME), was particularly notable because beautiful photographs dominate its print pages and online articles. And while it seems unthinkable for a publication so reliant on high-caliber images to cut its photographers, it had only six of them on its staff. Many photos on its pages come from Getty Images, the Associated Press and other providers.

For the past 14 years and 9 months, I’ve been in love with my job as a staff photographer at the Ventura County Star.  I’ve been shooting since my father told me never to touch his camera. I was about four years old at the time.  Doors have opened for me since that include a BFA in film from Art Center College of Design, freelance work with LIFE magazine and being exhibited at the Annenberg Space for Photography.  I’m just getting my groove on now, there’s a lot more to come.   I would consider it an honor to be elected onto the board and delighted to add my energy and creativity into the PPAGLA.  I’d like to not only contribute to the education of college student members but also see if we can offer a program for high school students, even grade school children, helping to create a better understanding of what it is that we do, its importance and how they can grow their skills as good young photojournalists.

Nancy Newman is currently serving on the PPAGLA Board of Directors.  She has served from 2012-2014, 2004-2007, and 1991-1997.   She is a Past- President, and has also served  2 years as Vice-President.  After the Princess Diana tragedy, Nancy initiated, and created a team to create the organizations Code of Ethics, a document which she wrote, and  which still stands today.  She has overseen Dodger Night, the Annual Awards Banquet, and also co-chaired the PPAGLA "The New World of Media" conference for our members. Nancy was a staff photographer for the Pasadena Star-News, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.  She has run her own photography business, Nancy Newman Photography for the last 17 years, serving major clients and corporations nationwide. In addition to her work with PPAGLA, Nancy mentors students pursuing photojournalism, and  looks forward to the opportunity to continue giving back to PPAGLA, and to a profession which she says has given her so much.

Jim Ober is currently on the board of Directors, and served as President in 1984, He has been continuosly involved with the the PPAGLA since he joined in 1971 and served as Treasurer in 1972, He was the editor of Just One More for many years, and is currently the Ad Chairman for Just One More.  He is a 1964 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and Pepperdine College, and learned the newspqper business there and during his four years of high school in the Scholastic Sports Assn which was part of the Los Angeles Examiner.  In 1968, while still in college, he went to work for the  LA Herald Examiner until 1979 when he started his own business, Trackside Photo, which specializes in off-road racing photography. He also was a principal in a p.r./ad agency, Dietrich, Ober & Rettie, Inc., whose clients included BFGoodrich and Cosworth Racing Engines.   He continues his work photo work running Trackside Photo and his hobby is working on his vintage Studebakers.

Unauthorized Photojournalism Images Turned Into Custom Smartphone Cases on Amazon

Khai Le

A gut-wrenching image of a lifeless child being carried away from the scene of a bomb blast appeared today, emblazoned on an iPhone case for sale on Amazon.

The image was originally shot by The New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks, who’d captured the it earlier this year. The photo had appeared on the front page of The Times.

The paper did not grant permission for Hicks’ photograph to be used by these Amazon-authorized sellers, and most certainly not for an iPhone case.

Photojournalists Hire Lobbyists to Fight for Favorable Drone Rules

Khai Le

Reports that you might need a pilot license to use drones commercially have provoked the National Press Photographers Association into hiring lobbyists from the Holland & Knight law firm to fight for more relaxed drone-flying standards from the FAA according to a report from the Hill. Two former House of Representative staffers have registered as lobbyists for the group to talk to the FAA as it drafts rules for commercial drones.

PPAGLA Student Amy Gaskins places third in College Media Association Pinnacle Awards

Khai Le

Community Colleges can create great photojournalists.

Santa Monica College’s Amy Gaskin Placing Third against giants like Western Kentucky and the University of Kentucky in the College Media Association Pinnacle Awards is a deeply satisfying proof.

Ms. Gaskin was reeling from the sleeplessness of the Eddie Adam’s Workshop in October, but forged ahead on more deprivation by covering California Chrome at the Breeders Cup during the last weekend in October.

A day after publication on the SMC Corsair website last spring the Chrome story was the second most searched story on Google, behind the Sports Illustrated story. Old pro’s at the Breeders Cup have been talking about it and surprised to find the shooter working in their midst.

At the EAW Ms. Gaskin’s interviewed with former Sports Illustrated photo editor Jimmy Colton. Colton said in an email interview, “I told her that her work on the California Chrome story would have been a winner regardless of the horse's status. Some really fine images behind the scenes as well as gorgeous light in some of the race action. She was one of the most enthusiastic students I have ever met during my 24 years at EAW!”

There is insight in Ms. Gaskin’s work, coupled with a curiosity about people and society, photographic excellence, and drive. Speaking as an educator, Ms Gaskin best embodies the qualities we hope to instill in a successful new generation of visual journalists.
