Zimmerman verdict protesters attack TV reporter, storm Wal-Mart

Khai Le

A peaceful protest of the George Zimmerman verdict in Los Angeles turned violent Monday after youths broke away from the main demonstration in Leimert Park, stomped on cars, broke windows, set fires and attacked several people.

KCBS-TV/KCAL-TV reporter Dave Bryan and his cameraman were among those who came under assault. One of the two journalists was taken to a hospital with a possible concussion, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Andy Neiman told The Times.

PPAGLA Lighting Seminar & Portfolio Reviews

Khai Le

Thanks to Board member Kirk McCoy the PPAGLA ran two student workshops at the Los Angeles Times in May and June.

Eighteen students from Southland colleges attended the May presentation on location flash for portraits lead by McCoy in the L.A.Times photo studio. After a slide show of his award winning portraits, McCoy engaged the students in a hands-on demonstration of portable studio equipment.

Nancy Newman, Khai Le, Lou Gabrielle and Gerard Burkhart provided individual critiques of student work following the workshop.

Students came from as far as Santa Barbara for the June Brush Fire Safety workshop. Although it had half as many attendees there was twice the engagement from the students. President Dave Fernandez, Board Members Kirk McCoy, Khai Le and Gerard Burkhart presented a lesson on strategies for staying safe in a brush fire followed by a lengthy discussion on gear and other survival skills. PPAGLA member Robert Gauthier attended and contributed his experiences as well.

A group critique followed the discussion.

The Fire Safety Seminar was initially proposed as a joint effort with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. At the time of planning the LACFD had changed PIO’s and we couldn’t quite get it lined up properly. For next year we plan to have the fire seminar well before fire season begins.

Monthly student critiques and seminars will resume in September

Tribune's $2.7-billion TV deal would accelerate media consolidation

Khai Le

Tribune Co.'s proposed $2.7-billion acquisition of 19 television stations owned by Local TV Holdings would accelerate the rapid consolidation of the television business.

Tribune on Monday said that it had entered into a definitive agreement to buy the stations, which would give Tribune a total of 42 TV stations -- up from its current count of 23. The all-cash deal would make Tribune one of the biggest TV-station owners in the country and the largest independent affiliate station group for Fox Broadcasting. Tribune would control 14 Fox affiliates.
