Student Application

All students who are enrolled as full-time students in greater Los Angeles are community colleges or four-year institutions, public or private and are enrolled in one or more photography or photojournalism majors, are eligible for student membership in the Press Photographers Association of Greater Los Angeles.

 

All persons employed as full-time staff photographers on a daily and weekly newspapers, national newsphoto services, national news and sports magazines, television photojournalists, and independent photographers whose photographs are published on a regular basis and whose income is primarily derived in the above mentioned publications and services, who are assigned to the greater Los Angeles area or its environs shall be eligible for membership as determined by the Board of Directors. The environs of greater Los Angeles shall be defined as being within boundaries of any county which falls within 100 miles of the Los Angeles City Hall.
 
 

Why should I join the PPAGLA?

Joining the Press Photographers Assn. Of Greater Los Angeles is a chance for you to connect with others in the profession; through our yearly seminars and social events, our monthly and yearly photo competitions, and to receive our bi-monthly newsletter, Just One More, Jr, which is full of contest winning photos and industry news.

Our association was founded in 1936, when still and newsreel cameramen were not regarded very favorably. Strangely, we are still fighting the same problems 73 years later, and your membership will add to our numbers to help continue our cause.

We also have a student scholarship fund, which raises thousands of dollars annually for aspiring photographers. Students can compete in our annual contest to win that scholarship money.

We have three categories of membership one can join:

• Students (annual membership fee of $25.00)

• Associate: you must be a public relations person affiliated with the news business, or a teaching professional in the video or still photography arena. (annual membership fee of $50.00)

• Professional: a working professional as described below and within a certain geographical area near Los Angeles. (annual membership fee of $50.00)

Professional members can enter the monthly competition for still photography and the annual competition, which has valuable prizes, and video shooters can enter our annual competition with cash prizes.

All members receive the Just One More annual photo book ($75 value) and the Just One More Jr., a bi-monthly newsletter about members and press photography in the L.A. area.

Special events for members include semi annual educational seminars featuring the latest cameras and lighting gear, techniques, and job acquiring skills. Annual Social events include our Awards Dinner, Christmas Party and Dodger Night.

Professional members receive a PPAGLA ID card and “Media on Assignment” dash placard (recognized by LAPD and most law enforcement agencies) with the State statue 409.5 on the back of the card.
